Walking and Hiking Tips

When planning a hike or walk it is important to remember the following:

1) Take water and snacks

2) Apply sun protection to all exposed areas of the body and carry extra to reapply.

3) Wear comfortable clothing and shoes. If hiking, hiking boots are recommended to be worn.

4) Carry a map and/or download a GPS app for your smart phone.

5) Notify your friends and family of your planned route and expected time.
Don't forget to pick up the La Quinta Hiking map inside City Hall at the Community Services counter or click here to view trails online.

Hike Ratings

Please consider the trail rating when choosing a hike:

Easy - Generally a leisurely walk, but don't expect the trail to be flat.

Moderate - A serious hike, but not difficult for those in reasonably good condition.

Strenuous - Some trail segments require being in very good condition and/or the trail is long and requires stamina.

Difficulty ratings are based on one-way trips.  When assessing how difficult a trail may be for you, consider whether you plan to return on the same trail, thereby doubling your distance, or using another trail which also adds mileage and difficulty.  Be aware that using two moderate trails to complete a loop may result in a strenuous hike.
